  • You will need to bring your original documents 
  • Find information on the required documents and where your local Service Canada Centre is by visiting the SIN Apply page and select the scenario that best describes your situation
  • If everything is in order, you will get your SIN during your visit

You must wait 10 business days after it is submitted online before checking the status of the request.

If you provided your email address on your online application, you will receive 2 emails:

  • one confirming your application has been received
  • a second when your application has been processed

If your application does not meet the requirements, your second email will indicate what is required to reapply.

If it has been more than 10 days since you applied online, please consult the information below:

If you provided your email address, you will receive an email confirming your application has been received and a second email when your application has been processed.

If your application did not meet the requirements, you will receive an email or letter indicating that the application was rejected, as well as what is required to obtain a SIN.

If you choose to receive your SIN:

  • digitally and are eligible by signing in or registering for My Service Canada Account (MSCA) your SIN will be available to view as soon as your SIN application is processed. You will not receive your SIN confirmation letter by mail.
  • by mail or you received an email indicating that you are not eligible to receive your SIN digitally, you will receive your SIN confirmation letter by mail.

If your application meets the requirements, it will be processed and mailed to the address indicated on your application.

If your application did not meet the requirements, you will receive a letter indicating what is required to obtain a SIN.
