1.2 For benefit periods where no regular benefits were paid and a combination of special benefits paid;
  • benefit periods extended for maternity, parental and illness, maximum combined weeks is 65;
  • benefit periods extended for parental, illness and compassionate care or for maternity, parental and compassionate care, maximum combined weeks is 56; and
  • benefit periods extended for maternity, parental, illness and compassionate care, the maximum combined weeks is 71.
During benefit periods where regular and special benefits paid, combined weeks of 50.

Limit 2: Maximum period during which special benefits may be paid References
2.1 during the benefit period, which may not exceed 52 weeks in length unless extended for reasons below. EIA 10(2)
2.2 during the benefit period extended by the number of weeks (up to a possible maximum of 52 additional weeks) in respect of which the person was not entitled to benefit by reason of being:
  • confined in a jail;
  • in receipt of earnings paid by reason of the complete severance of the relationship with the former employer;
  • in receipt of workers' compensation payments for an injury;
  • in receipt of compensation for the withdrawal of services.

2.4 during benefit periods where parental benefits are paid and the baby is hospitalized, the benefit period may be extended by the number of weeks that the child is in hospital.

during benefit periods where no regular benefits were paid and combined special benefits were paid:

  • benefit periods extended to receive maximum maternity, parental and illness benefits; 67 weeks,
  • benefit periods extended to receive maximum parental, illness and compassionate care benefits or to receive maximum maternity, parental and compassionate care benefits, 58 weeks and,
  • benefit periods extended to receive maximum maternity, parental, illness and compassionate care benefits, 73 weeks.
The extension(s) may not result in a benefit period greater than 104 weeks.
