Summary of public comments received on the first draft screening assessment for 2-pyrrolidinone, 1-methyl- (NMP) and 2-pyrrolidinone, 1-ethyl- (NEP).

Comments on the first draft Screening Assessment for 2-Pyrrolidinone, 1-methyl- (NMP) and 2-Pyrrolidinone, 1-ethyl- (NEP), assessed under the Chemicals Management Plan (CMP), were submitted by ArcelorMittal Dofasco, Canadian Consumer Specialty Products Association, and an individual.

Summarized public comments and responses are provided below, organized by topic:

Follow-up activities

Comment summary 1: The stakeholder provided additional use information for 2-pyrrolidinone, 1-methyl- (NMP), for consideration.

Response 1: The additional information submitted by the stakeholder was considered. There was no further refinement of the updated draft assessment as the industrial/commercial uses had previously been identified through other sources in the first draft screening assessment. Additionally, the use information did not change the proposed follow-up activities.

Public consultation and stakeholder engagement

Comment summary 2: The Government should publish a list of substances that will be assessed in the next six months to encourage submission of voluntary information.

Response 2: Stakeholders and the public may refer to the  Status of substances prioritized under the Chemicals Management Plan (2006-2024) as of October 8, 2022 for more information regarding upcoming activities or subscribing to the Latest News webpage for all publications related to the Chemicals Management Plan.

Risk management

Comment summary 3: NMP should be prohibited for use in paint strippers, since NMP is very dangerous for pregnant women.

Response 3: The risk to the general population, including persons of childbearing age, to this substance when present in paint strippers is considered to be low and is not of concern. The proposed risk management activities will focus on minimizing the risks identified in the risk assessment.
