Technical Consultation on Health Canada's Proposal to Allow the Use of the Food Additive Steviol Glycosides as a Table-Top Sweetener and as a Sweetener in Certain Food Categories

As a result of this process, a modification was made to the List of Permitted Sweeteners to enable the use of steviol gylcosides as a table-top sweetener and as a sweetener in certain food categories on November 30, 2012. The proposed use of this food additive in Canada as described is now enabled.

Health Canada's Food Directorate has recently completed a detailed safety assessment of steviol glycosides for use as a table-top sweetener in certain food categories.

Since no safety concerns have been raised through this assessment, the department is proposing to authorize the use of steviol glycoside as described in the information document below. The purpose of this communication is to seek comments on this proposed action.

This consultation is open for comment starting July 31, 2012 until October 14, 2012 (75 calendar days). Comments on this proposal may be submitted in writing, by regular mail or electronically. If you are submitting your comments electronically, please use the words "Steviol Glycosides" in the subject line of your e-mail.
