The J.C. Van Horne Bridge was built between 1958 and 1961. The bridge connects 2 provincial road systems and serves as a vital link between Quebec’s Gaspé Peninsula and Northern New Brunswick. Its 2 traffic lanes carry an average of 12,500 vehicles daily. It has 2 sidewalks. The next closest crossing of the Restigouche River is the Matapedia Interprovincial Bridge, about 20 kilometres west.

Description of the bridge

Measuring 804 m in total length, the bridge consists of 4 deck-truss approach-spans on each side joined in the middle by a significant cantilever-through-truss structure. The cantilever-through-truss structure itself is 419 m long and at the main piers, it towers 36.5 m above the roadway. It provides a clear span of 248 m over the navigational channel of the Restigouche River.

History of the bridge

Information for motorists and traffic

To keep the bridge operating safely, Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) maintains a rigorous inspection and assessment of the bridge on an annual basis. Repair and maintenance projects are planned and executed based on the findings of this assessment program. Motorists and other users of the bridge can occasionally expect to encounter alternating lane closures and/or traffic delays to allow workers to safely conduct repair/maintenance projects or ongoing inspections and assessments of the facility.

Public notices about the closures will be issued in advance and shared through our social media channels. This will ensure that the public is aware of each closure and its impact on local traffic.
