Symptoms of Powassan virus disease
Most people who become infected with Powassan virus develop either very mild, flu-like symptoms or no symptoms at all.
Signs and symptoms of infection can include:
- fever
- seizures
- vomiting
- weakness
- confusion
- headache
- memory loss
In some individuals, Powassan virus disease can cause:
- encephalitis (inflammation of the brain)
- meningitis (inflammation of the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord)
What to do if you become ill
See your health care provider right away if you experience symptoms or feel unwell in the weeks following a tick bite. Tell them about your symptoms and if you participated in any outdoor activities in an at-risk area.
If you saved the tick that bit you, bring it to your medical appointment.
Tell them:
- how long the tick was attached to you
- where you were when you were bitten by the tick
