International Ombuds Day 2025 - Empowering Voices, Resolving Challenges
Ombudsman Message | 9 October 2025
Today, we celebrate the 8th annual Ombudsman Day, observed every second Thursday of October.
First launched in 2018 by the American Bar Association, this day was created to raise awareness about the vital role an Ombuds plays in promoting fairness, resolving conflicts, and strengthening accountability across institutions.
As the Ombudsman for the Department of National Defence and Canadian Armed Forces, I am proud to be part of a global profession that listens, guides, and helps resolve concerns with integrity and impartiality. Ombuds offices like ours offer confidential, independent, and respectful support — helping individuals navigate complex systems and fostering systemic change.
This year, I also recognize the United Nations General Assembly’s endorsement of Ombudsman and mediator institutions as key actors in promoting human rights, good governance, and the rule of law. Let’s continue to empower voices, build trust, and advocate for fairness — in Canada and around the world.
