Enabling connectivity at the G7 in Kananaskis: Meet Alana Maloley

Meet Alana Maloley, a Shared Services Canada (SSC) employee whose work is literally hidden inside walls but provides important results for significant events.

Currently a Technical Advisor for the Cabling Services Product Management team within the Connectivity and Security Services Branch at SSC, Alana was tapped to be the lead liaison for providing connectivity to the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, this past June.

Growing up in Russell, Ontario, Alana’s grandfather encouraged her to take a computer course in college. Her education at Willis College laid the foundation for her future success.

Alana’s journey with the Government of Canada began at Transport Canada, where she honed her skills as a LAN administrator. She then joined SSC in 2014. Within the Cabling Services Product Management team, she validates partner funding for all their cabling requests.

Working on the G7 project built on Alana’s existing skills while also providing new opportunities. “I’ve never worked on a project as high profile as the G7 before,” says Alana. “I have done IT support for ministers and deputy ministers but never a project as grand in scale as a summit.” Before this, the largest project she had worked on was the Whole Building Approach for installing Wi-Fi, which saw an unprecedented number of buildings completed in record time in 2024.

In addition to installing the backbone infrastructure, copper and fibre requirements to provide connectivity among the 7 Summit locations, Alana collaborated with the other federal departments providing support to the Summit to ensure their communication needs were met. At times, she worked with up to 20 cabling technicians to ensure the work was completed.

Alana feels she was selected for the project because of her work ethic and her ability to multitask. “As a woman working in STEM, I believe that hard work, solid expertise and a willingness to listen, learn and help others are qualities that earn the respect of co-workers and the people around you,” she says.

Her colleagues agree. “Alana’s drive, desire to learn and attention to detail are just some of the attributes that make her an asset to our team and to SSC,” says her colleague Andrew Matheson. “She doesn’t hesitate to take on new challenges and is always willing to jump in wherever she’s needed. Alana exhibits SSC’s core values in everything she does. She is an excellent steward by ensuring that SSC receives the best value for the money spent, has respect for every client and everyone she interacts with, and strives for excellence in everything she does.”

Alana was on-site at the G7 to assist as needed and very much looked forward to seeing the results of the project after months of planning. Success for her was seeing the infrastructure working and reliable before the Summit, with no issues during the event. Alana also enjoyed meeting a diverse group of incredible people while working on the project and made memories that will stay with her forever. For her, it has been the opportunity of a lifetime—she still feels she has to pinch herself to believe it is really happening.
