Residents of Haines Junction to benefit from water and wastewater infrastructure investment

Haines Junction, Yukon, January 8, 2019— The governments of Canada and Yukon are committed to investing in local infrastructure that ensures Northern Canadians and their families have access to modern, reliable water services that meet their unique needs.

Today, the Honourable Larry Bagnell, Member of Parliament for Yukon, on behalf of the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities; the Honourable John Streicker, Yukon Minister of Community Services; and Haines Junction mayor Thomas Eckervogt announced joint funding for Phase Two of the Haines Junction Infrastructure Rehabilitation project.

The Government of Canada is investing up to $4.5 million to this project through the Small Communities Fund, representing over two-thirds of the estimated $6 million total project cost. The Government of Yukon is investing up to $1.5 million in this project.

The second phase of this project will improve underground water and wastewater mains and pipes, as well as road and drainage work on Macintosh Street, Auriol Street, Kluane Street, Logan Street, Martin Street, Steele Street, Lucania Street, Bates Street, Lowell Street and Kathleen Road. Once complete, this project will provide more reliable and efficient water and wastewater services for area residents, now and in the future.

Quick facts

  • Through the Investing in Canada infrastructure plan, the Government of Canada will invest more than $180 billion over 12 years in public transit projects, green infrastructure, social infrastructure, trade and transportation routes, and Canada’s rural and northern communities.

  • $26.9 billion of this funding will support green infrastructure projects, including $5 billion that will be available for investment through the Canada Infrastructure Bank.

  • $2 billion of this funding will support infrastructure projects that meet the unique needs of rural and northern communities like facilities to support food security, local access roads and enhanced broadband connectivity. In addition, $400 million will be delivered through the Arctic Energy Fund to advance energy security in the territories.

  • $4 billion of this funding will support infrastructure projects in Indigenous communities.
