About the records

Many poor immigrants relied on benevolent societies (charities) for help when they arrived in North America. The Montreal Emigrant Society’s (est. 1831) main purpose was to provide transportation and provisions for immigrants who had arrived in Montréal from Québec and were destined for settlement in different parts of Lower Canada (Quebec) and Upper Canada (Ontario).

From 1831 to 1835, the organization provided relief to 49,740 immigrants. In 1832 (the year of this collection), 10,244 immigrants were given relief and 8,763 received assistance to settle.

Library and Archives Canada (LAC) holds the Montreal Emigrant Society’s passage book for the year 1832 (RG 7 G18, volume 46, microfilm 1604). This is the only register held by LAC as we have not been able to locate similar registers for other years in other institutions.
