This tool will form part of an Asset Management suite of GVTs as the activities to procure a good, service or real property are an integral part of the asset management life cycle
Communications Services
The communications function has links to all of the other activities of a government department
Financial Management (Updated June 2025)
While most Government of Canada functions and activities involve a financial component, this GVT has attempted to describe only business processes and records directly related to financial operations
Human Resources Management
The employee, or personnel file, documents the record of service of each individual employed by the federal government
Information Management
This Generic Valuation Tool (GVT) provides recommendations on business value and retention specifications related to internal information management (IM) services only
Information Technology
This tool may be used as a starting point for those organizations mandated to perform IT, or IT related services as they proceed with the identification of their IRBVs
Legal Services (Updated November 2025)
This GVT helps Government of Canada institutions identify and manage records related to legal activities, such as providing legal advice, drafting legislation, and supporting litigation
Management and Oversight
This GVT provides recommendations on business value and retention specifications related to internal Management and Oversight activities only
Materiel Services
Materiel Services involves activities undertaken to ensure that materiel can be managed by departments in a sustainable and financially responsible manner that supports the cost-effective and efficient delivery of government programs
Real Property Services
This GVT is to be used by departments who are managing real property as part of their internal services as either a Custodian or a Tenant department
Travel and Other Administrative Services
Travel and Other Administrative Services are identified at the sub-sub activity level of the Treasury Board Secretariat’s (TBS) Profile of Government of Canada (GC) Internal Services (Profile) and are common across the Government of Canada
