#ServiceInAction photo initiative

Calling all youth volunteers across Canada!

The Canada Service Corps (CSC) is celebrating International Youth Day and we want YOU to join us! Whether you are a current CSC project participant, an alumni who is still engaging in service, or a youth volunteer in your community, we want to hear from you. You’ll be entered in a draw to receive a Parks Canada Discovery pass!

  • Four (4) participants will be randomly selected.
  • Entries will be accepted from August 1st, 2022 at 9:00 am (EDT) until August 10th, 2022, at 11:59 pm (EDT).
  • The results will be announced on August 12th, in recognition of International Youth Day through a story on the Leaders Today Instagram channel.

How to Enter

  1. Review and ensure you understand the #ServiceInAction initiative’s rules and eligibility criteria
  2. Post a picture of yourself completing a Canada Service Corps activity (or other volunteer activity) on your public profile, using all three hashtags #CanadaServiceCorps, #LeadersToday and #ServiceInAction and tagging @LeadersToday
  3. Include a brief description on how volunteering in your community or elsewhere in Canada impacted you, and confirm the category of your entry.
  4. You may participate as many times as you wish by submitting multiple entries, to increase your chances.
  5. Please refer to the participation requirements for additional eligibility criteria

Rules and eligibility criteria


1) Who can participate?

Youth between the age of 15 to 30 years who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents are invited to participate (the “Participants”).

The initiative is not open to employees, immediate family members of employees or persons living at the same address as an employee of Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC). Furthermore, government organizations, Members of Parliament, celebrities or other partners with social media accounts promoting the initiative for ESDC and its Ministers, may participate and promote the initiative, but are not eligible to be selected as one of the recipients of the Parks Canada Discovery Pass.

There is no fee to participate, and no purchase is necessary. Details on how to enter are listed under section 3.

2) Participation period

Entries will be accepted on August 1st, 2022 at 9:00 am (EDT) until August 10th, 2022, at 11:59 pm (EDT). The selected entries will be announced on August 12th to celebrate International Youth Day.

3) Participation requirements

To enter, participants must post a picture of themselves on Instagram completing a Canada Service Corps (CSC) volunteer activity on their public profile (or other volunteer activity), using all threehashtags #CanadaServiceCorps, #LeadersToday and #ServiceInAction and tagging @LeadersToday. Participants must also include a brief description of how volunteering in their community or elsewhere in Canada impacted them, as well as which of the four entry categories they best fit under as outlined below:

  • CSC Service Placement in Action
    Open to youth currently enrolled in a CSC-funded Service Placement
  • CSC Micro-grants in Action
    Open to youth who are delivering a CSC-funded Micro-grant project
  • CSC Alumni Continuing Service
    Open to youth who previously completed a CSC-funded program
  • Youth Serving their Communities
    Open to youth not currently involved in a CSC-funded program, but actively serving their community

One entry per category will be selected to receive a Parks Canada Discovery Pass. Participants can enter this initiative and participate as many times as they wish by submitting multiple entries to increase their chances. Each picture posted will be registered as a separate entry.

Participants should also make a copy of their entry if they wish to keep a copy.

Entry rules

  • Photos must be taken in Canada.
  • The entry must be an original photo that was taken for the purpose of this initiative or for the participant’s personal and private use. The photo cannot be copied or reproduced from a third party source.
  • Entries must be posted publicly so that ESDC can access the content.
  • Participants under the age of majority in their respective province or territory must obtain parental consent to submit their photo and to receive a Parks Canada Discovery Pass.

Photo Eligibility

  • The entry must not contain the personal information, as that term is defined in section 3 of the federal Privacy Act, of anyone other than the identified participant. An entry will be declared invalid if it is found to include — in the photo or accompanying text — the personal information of anyone other than the participant.
  • Entries will be declared invalid if they are submitted after this initiative closes.
  • Entries will be declared invalid if they are illegible, incomplete, forged, corrupted or reproduced from another person’s work.
  • Entries will be declared invalid if any third party trademarks, brands and/or logos such as sports team logos, businesses, restaurants or coffee chains, etc. are used or displayed in any part of the submitted photo, obviously or subliminally.
  • Entries will be declared invalid if they negatively depict another person, nation, country, ethnicity, race, religion, age, sex, gender, sexual orientation or disability.
  • Entries will be declared invalid if they contain content deemed offensive or inappropriate, including but not limited to nudity, vulgarity or violence, or if they infringe Instagram’s terms of use.
4) Evaluation criteria

Up to four (4) entries will be awarded through random selection. The Participants’ odds of being selected will depend upon the total number of eligible entries received within the participation period. CSC will create an excel spreadsheet with all usernames of the initiative’s entries, up to four (4) of which will be randomly selected by MS Excel. This document will only be kept in ESDC’s internal files for the duration of the initiative.

Should a selected entry not meet the requirements outlined in section 3, it will be declared null and void, and another selection may be made.

Selected entries will be announced on August 12th, 2022 to celebrate International Youth Day. ESDC reserves the right not to select a recipient if no entries are deemed suitable.

5) Selected Entries
Selection and disclaimer

ESDC will post a story on their Leaders Today channels to announce the selected recipients’ with the following: “Congratulations @Usernames, you have been selected to receive a @ParksCanada Discovery Pass for your #ServiceInAction. We will contact you via private message on Instagram to claim your pass #LeadersToday #CanadaServiceCorps”

If, for any reason, any of the selected participants cannot be reached through Instagram, or does not respond within forty-eight (48) hours of being contacted, or if there is any reason they cannot accept the Parks Canada Discovery Pass, their entry will be declared null and void, and another selection may be made among the entries.

Use of personal information and photos

By participating in the initiative and posting a photo on their public account, participants expressly consent to the collection, use, storage and disclosure of their personal information (including their Instagram username) and by the Government of Canada for the purposes of administering this initiative, as well as for other purposes expressly contemplated in these rules and regulations in accordance with the federal Privacy Act. By submitting a photo, the participants expressly consent that ESDC may use the participants’ personal information to communicate with them and to announce and/or post the usernames of the selected participants on the ESDC Leaders Today Instagram account.

Participants also have the right to file a complaint with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OPC) at any time regarding ESDC’s handling of your personal information. For information about submitting a complaint with the OPC, please visit their website at www.priv.gc.ca.

If additional use of the submitted photo or video as part of the #ServiceInAction photo initiative should be done by ESDC, they would communicate with the participants to fill out any additional license or release forms before proceeding. The participants will have the right to accept or refuse the additional usage of the photo.

Additional Personal Information Required

In addition to their submitted photo, participants will also have to provide personal information directly to ESDC when contacted by private message. Participants will be asked to provide their email address for the purpose of sending the selected participants a consent form, which will include a Privacy Notice Statement, by email to complete and sign in order to receive a Parks Canada Discovery Pass. For entries selected where the individual is under the age of majority in their province or territory, a parent or legal guardian must sign the consent form.

Participants will also be required to submit proof of their age (15-30 years old), proof of residency through any government approved identification to validate their identity, and attest to their participation in a CSC-funded service opportunity (year and organization), if applicable. The selected recipients will also be required to submit a declaration that they are not an employee of ESDC, not an immediate family member of an employee of ESDC, and not living under the same roof as an employee of ESDC.

6) Parks Canada Discovery Pass disclaimer

The Parks Canada Discovery Pass is offered by CSC on behalf of ESDC. The Parks Canada Discovery Pass must be accepted as awarded — no substitutions, transfers or exchanges will be permitted. The Parks Canada Discovery Pass have no cash redemption value. CSC will make the necessary arrangements to deliver the Parks Canada Discovery passes to the selected recipients. The Parks Canada Discovery Pass must be accepted as described above and cannot be transferred to a third-party.

The Parks Canada Discovery Pass will be awarded only on verification by ESDC that the selected recipients are eligible to participate in this initiative and that their entries meet the requirements specified above.

7) Correspondence

ESDC will not respond to questions regarding the initiative’s rules, including the eligibility criteria, from any participants except the confirmed selected recipients. If inquiries are made regarding this initiative, an employee of ESDC will refer the individual to the initiative’s rules.

8) Statement and license

By sharing an entry on Instagram for this initiative, the participant understands and agrees that the entry will also be subject to Instagram’s terms of use and license.

By sharing an entry on Instagram for this initiative, the participant acknowledges that the initiative is in no way sponsored, endorsed or administered by, or associated with Instagram.

By sharing an entry for the initiative, the participant states that:

  • the entry is their own original work;
  • they own all the rights in the entry, including copyright;
  • they meet the eligibility requirements of the initiative;
  • if under the age of majority, have obtained consent from their parent or legal guardian to submit the photo.

ESDC reserves the rights, at its option, to reshare any selected recipients’ name, social media handle, photograph, and statement regarding this Photo Initiative, for the purposes of announcing the selected entries, without compensation or any other advance notice.

9) Release and exclusion of liability

By entering or attempting to enter this initiative, each participant and/or purported participant agrees to release, discharge and forever hold harmless ESDC and its officers, directors, employees and agents from any and all claims, actions, damages, injuries, demands, manner of actions, causes of action, suits, debts, duties, accounts, bonds, covenants, warranties, indemnities, claims over, contracts and liabilities of whatever nature or kind arising out of or in connection with the participant’s participation or attempted participation in this initiative.

ESDC will not be responsible for lost, incomplete, late or misdirected entries or for any failure of its website, nor for Instagram’s platform performance. ESDC will not be responsible for any technical malfunction or other problems with any telephone networks or lines, computer online systems, servers, access providers, computer equipment or software, or for any technical problems or traffic congestion on the Internet.

Her Majesty the Queen in Right of Canada assumes no responsibility to any Participant for any direct or indirect, special, consequential or punitive damages in connection with the initiative or these Rules and Regulations.

General

ESDC reserves the right to exclude from its social media pages any post that does not comply with these rules and regulations or for any reason that ESDC determines in its sole discretion without notice at any time.

ESDC reserves the right to modify, suspend or cancel this Photo Initiative in whole or in part for any reason at its sole discretion.

ESDC reserves the absolute right, at its sole discretion, to reject any participant who enters this Photo Initiative in a manner that is contrary to these rules and regulations, disruptive to the proper operation of the initiative, or by its nature is unjust to other participants.

This initiative is subject to applicable federal, provincial, and territorial laws. This initiative is void where prohibited or restricted by law.

Confirmation of the understanding and acceptance of the terms and conditions

Submission of an entry by Participants will be construed as the Participant acknowledging that they understand and accept the rules of the initiative.

By submitting a photo to the #ServiceInAction Photo Initiative, you confirm that you have read and understood these terms and conditions and that you accept them.
