Canadian Agricultural Partnership program details announced in Prince Edward Island

Canadian farmers and food processors work hard to ensure that consumers in Canada and around the world have access to high-quality, and safe agricultural and food products. Agriculture is a backbone of the Prince Edward Island economy, representing the largest industry in 2016 with farm cash receipts equalling $487 million. The governments of Canada and Prince Edward Island are working hard to give farmers and food processors the support they need to grow, innovate and prosper.
Today, Federal Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister, the Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, and the Honourable Robert Henderson, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, announced the Canadian Agricultural Partnership program details for the agricultural sector in Prince Edward Island. The Canadian Agricultural Partnership is a $3 billion, five-year investment by federal, provincial and territorial governments to strengthen the agriculture, agri-food and agri-based products sector.
Under the Canadian Agricultural Partnership, Canada and Prince Edward Island governments will invest $37 million in non-business risk management programs for the agriculture and food sector over the next five years. The new agreement will focus on emerging priorities, such as environmental sustainability, diversity and public confidence in the sector, and regional collaboration while continuing to support markets and trade, science, research and innovation, risk management, and value-added agriculture and agri-food processing. It also includes a new focus on environmental sustainability, climate change and public trust.
Under the Partnership, farmers will also continue to have access to a complete and effective suite of business risk management programs to help them manage significant risks that threaten the viability of their farm and are beyond their capacity to manage.
