From Awareness to Action: National Indigenous History Month in the Defence Team
Article / June 11, 2026 / National Defence
June marks National Indigenous History Month in Canada, a time for both recognition and reflection. It offers an opportunity to honour histories, celebrate cultures, and amplify the voices of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples across our country and organization while also recognizing their longstanding contributions and service within the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) and the Department of National Defence (DND).
This month also invites reflection on both progress and responsibility. As part of the Defence Team, there is a shared commitment to ensuring that everyone experiences a sense of protection, respect, and belonging. Creating and sustaining an inclusive environment strengthens the support available to Indigenous members across the organization and their communities, while contributing to a more effective and diverse Defence Team.
This commitment is grounded in national frameworks, including the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, which guide ongoing CAF and DND efforts to foster an environment where Indigenous members feel respected, supported, and empowered in their service.
Initiatives such as the recently observed Indigenous Awareness Week (IAW) demonstrate how awareness can be translated into action. Each year, IAW brings Defence Team members together from across the country to participate in cultural events. National Indigenous History Month, held shortly after IAW, presents other opportunities to deepen this engagement nationwide and to strengthen relationships with Indigenous communities.
Yet, as impactful as these events are, they are only a starting point. The journey is not confined to a week or a month; it is continuous and must be reflected in everyday actions.
DND supports a range of programs aimed at empowering Indigenous youth and communities while also strengthening connections. Initiatives such as the Indigenous Leadership Opportunity Year (ILOY) and Indigenous Summer Programs offer valuable experiences to Indigenous Peoples, many of whom go on to join the CAF or the broader Defence Team. These efforts contribute to greater inclusion, improved representation, and stronger relationships with Indigenous communities.
Ultimately, fostering an inclusive Defence Team is a shared responsibility. Whether serving in uniform or working as a civilian, every member has a role to play. There is no single path to being an ally, but each begins with a willingness to listen and learn. As we observe National Indigenous History Month, let it serve not as an endpoint, but as a reminder, one that calls for ongoing commitment, humility, and purpose, not only in June, but throughout the year as we continue advancing these efforts.
