Seeing the Value in Community Space

For 10 years now, the Murphy’s Community Centre has operated in downtown Charlottetown as a not-for-profit public gathering space, providing much needed recreational programming to the general public.
Sean Casey, Member of Parliament for Charlottetown, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, today announced funding to modernize the popular facility. The Government of Canada, through ACOA’s Innovative Communities Fund, is investing $522,639 in this project.
Built in 1963, and operated for many years by St. Dunstan’s Parish, the building has experienced a renewal over the last decade. The current major renovations, which include updates to the gymnasium, family bowling centre, meeting spaces, and childcare facilities, aim to address the evolving needs of Islanders and contribute to the overall well-being and sustainability of the community.
With over 40 programs, the Centre reduces financial and accessibility barriers to active living, and offers educational and social opportunities to a diverse demographic - from children to seniors, persons with disabilities, newcomers and minority groups - all in a safe and secure environment.
