Cape Breton Regional Municipality Recreational Facilities Receive Boost

Government of Canada provides contributions for two recreation projects in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality

Today, the Government of Canada announced $159,000 to support two recreation projects in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. The first project will see improvements made to the Northside Community Pool. The second project will assist Coxheath Elementary School with upgrades to their existing playground.
A non-repayable contribution of $100,500 provided through the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program (CIP150), will enable the Northside Pool Commission to upgrade the site’s decking area and replace the facility’s out-of-date piping system. The Northside Community Pool benefits the quality of life for area residents, and supports healthy living within the community through lane swims and educational classes for youth.
Additionally, Coxheath Elementary School will benefit from $58,500 in CIP150 funding as they work to improve the safety of their playground and incorporate nature-based play elements throughout the school yard such as an outdoor classroom, butterfly gardens, hill slides, logs, rocks, and trees. The CBRM Physical Activity Strategy emphasizes the importance of increasing opportunities for citizens to access physical activity in the natural environment. As a public playspace, the school’s natural playground initiative will work towards that goal, and will hopefully inspire others to complete similar projects within the local area.
Community projects such as these benefit from the contributions of multiple funding partners. The Northside Community Pool project also received $62,000 in support from the Government of Nova Scotia, and $188,000 from the CBRM. The Coxheath playground project received $20,000 from the Government of Nova Scotia, $20,000 from the CBRM, $3,556 from TD Friends of the Environment, $3,000 from the Toyota Evergreen Learning Grounds Program and $2,000 from the Rotary Club of Sydney. Once completed, these two projects will enhance the recreational infrastructure of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality and promote active living across various age groups and communities.
