Government of Canada Increases Support for Community Infrastructure in Atlantic Canada

News Release

The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), today announced that the Government of Canada is doubling its funding for the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program (CIP 150) for community and recreational infrastructure projects.

As outlined in Budget 2016, an additional $150 million will be provided over two years for this program, bringing the total funding available for the CIP 150 to $300 million. The program, which will continue to be delivered by the Regional Development Agencies, supports projects to renovate, expand and improve spaces such as community centres, parks

and arenas across Canada, to help celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation in 2017.
Today’s announcement provides supplementary funding of $16.6 million to the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, which brings the total funding available for CIP 150 projects in Atlantic Canada to $33.2 million over two years (2016 - 2018).

Through the CIP 150, the Government of Canada is investing in community and recreational infrastructure projects that will restore and upgrade the facilities and areas that bring Canadians together. These investments will help create jobs, boost economic activity, strengthen communities and celebrate Canada’s rich heritage and history.

Quote

“As we near Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation, the CIP 150 reminds us of the importance of the places in our communities that bring us together and make our communities stronger. What better way to invest in our communities than by renovating and improving the very places where we come together, so that these spaces can be enjoyed by Canadians for years to come.”
