Harbourside Complex gets Updates to Surrounding Infrastructure

News Release

May 25, 2016 – Charlottetown, PE – Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency
A well-used section of Charlottetown boardwalk will soon undergo upgrades that will improve safety and lighting efficiencies. The Charlottetown Area Development Corporation (CADC) owns and maintains a number of properties in downtown Charlottetown and surrounding areas, including the Harbourside Complex. A section of the seawall supporting the boardwalk in this area is showing extensive signs of wear and tear. The CADC will manage an improvement project for the boardwalk and seawall section and also carry out upgrades to the surrounding lighting.

Member of Parliament for Charlottetown Sean Casey, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), today joined CADC officials and stakeholders to announce an investment of $120,000 under the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program (CIP 150)  towards the project. CADC will match the investment for a total project cost of $240,000.

The project will involve complete repair work to a 100 foot section of seawall at the Harbourside Complex on the Charlottetown waterfront, and also the replacement of 20 light fixtures that will be energy efficient and shed more light on the walkways.

CADC is a not-for-profit organization that works to attract private sector development and investment opportunities to grow and expand commercial activity in the greater Charlottetown area. CADC works in partnership with its three stakeholders, the Province of PEI, the City of Charlottetown, and the Town of Stratford.

Quotes

“Communities big and small are bound by their social infrastructure: community centres, museums, recreational facilities and trails, to name but a few, are some of the examples that connect us as Canadians and are also used to welcome our visitors and spur our economy. The projects being supported through CIP 150 are a way for ‘Canada to give back to Canada’ as we celebrate our country’s 150th anniversary.”

- The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for ACOA

“I am pleased to announce funding through CIP 150 for CADC to carry out this infrastructure improvement project. This high-traffic pedestrian area connects the Charlottetown Cruise Ship Terminal, Peake’s Quay and the PEI Convention Centre boardwalks to the Charlottetown Yacht Club, the Armories and the Victoria Park boardwalks. It is a well-traveled path enjoyed by Islanders and visitors alike and its safety will be ensured for many years to come.”

- Sean Casey, MP for Charlottetown

“The Charlottetown Area Development Corporation is pleased to receive assistance from ACOA through the Canada 150 fund. We have been able to update two pieces of infrastructure that were showing their age. We have new energy efficient LED light standards and have made substantial repairs to a section of the Charlottetown seawall. This project would not have been possible without financial support from the Federal Government.”

- Mr. Ron Waite, General Manager, Charlottetown Area Development Corporation
