Lunenburg War Memorial Community Centre Auditorium Receives Upgrades
News Release
Government of Canada invests in energy-efficient heating system for community auditorium
Lunenburg, N.S. - Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) - The War Memorial Community Centre Auditorium in the Town of Lunenburg is undergoing upgrades following a non-repayable investment of $30,250 by the Government of Canada through the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program (CIP150).
The project involves the removal and disposal of a 58-year-old boiler-type heating system and the installation of a new, modern, energy-efficient system. The Town has issued a call for proposals to complete this work, and will be awarding the contract in the coming weeks.
The War Memorial Community Centre Auditorium was built in the 1950s and houses an exercise room, weight room, gymnasium, and climbing wall. The new heating system will lower the operating costs of the facility, create a more comfortable environment for users and increase the facility’s overall longevity. The community centre is relied upon by the Town and surrounding areas as a venue for recreational and cultural services, including a local farmers’ market, sporting events, cadet troop gatherings, and youth-focused programming.
There is also an update on an earlier community project. The Town is receiving an additional $266,794 in funding to support the repurposing of the 120-year-old Lunenburg Academy. This iconic heritage asset is being converted into a tourism- and culture-focused, revenue-generating, multi-purpose facility. In 2015, ACOA announced a non-repayable investment of $420,000 through ACOA’s Innovative Communities Fund (ICF) to support the upgrades.

“We can see, through projects like the Lunenburg War Memorial Auditorium and the Lunenburg Academy, that community facilities play an important role in bringing us together and making our communities stronger. In addition to supporting the activities of business people, cultural groups and learners of all ages, community centres are a place where families can be active and have fun.”
- Bernadette Jordan, Member of Parliament for South Shore-St. Margaret’s
“By making this upgrade to our Community Centre we are investing in a facility that is helping to sustain and grow our community. Generations of Lunenburgers have relied on this recreation complex for physical activity, sporting excitement, cultural gatherings, and community events. We need to make sure that this venue can continue to serve the community’s needs. Our new heating system will make this building more comfortable and also lower our operating costs.”
