Oromocto's Improved Gateway Nature Trails Officially Open to Public
News Release
Residents and visitors can now enjoy the conservation area with better access to trails and new boardwalk
June 7, 2016 – Oromocto, NB – Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency
The walking trails at the Oromocto Gateway Wetland Conservation Area have been expanded and are more accessible to the public, thanks to an investment from the Government of Canada.
Matt DeCourcey, Member of Parliament for Fredericton, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), made the announcement today as the Town of Oromocto celebrated the official opening of the Gateway Nature Trails with a ribbon cutting ceremony.
The project consisted of upgrading a roughed out walking trail in the Gateway Wetland Conservation Area and expanding it by adding 100 metres of new boardwalk.
The Government of Canada has invested $62,750 in the project through the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program (CIP150).
The CIP150 is providing up to $300 million nationally over two years to support projects to rehabilitate, renovate and expand community and recreational infrastructure as part of the Government of Canada’s activities to honour Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation. These investments will help create jobs, boost economic activity, strengthen communities and celebrate Canada’s rich heritage and history. CIP150 is administered by ACOA in the Atlantic region.
Quotes
“The Gateway Nature Trails project in Oromocto is a great example of what CIP150 is all about. Supporting renovations and improvements to the places where families go to spend quality time together is an ideal way to invest in our communities so that they can be enjoyed by Canadians for years to come.”
- The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for ACOA
“What better way to highlight International Trails Week than to celebrate the official opening of the improved Gateway Nature Trails. The Government of Canada is pleased to have supported this project to make the trails more accessible, helping to promote physical activity and to attract more people from outside the region to come and appreciate the beauty of this natural conservation area.”
- Matt DeCourcey, Member of Parliament for Fredericton
“It is exciting to see Council’s vision for this 17-hectare site become a reality with the opening of the first phase of the Gateway Wetland Nature Trails. Visitors to the area will be able to experience the natural phenomenon of the wetlands and view the environmental conservation first hand. This project would not have been possible without the support of our major partners at the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, Ducks Unlimited and the Oromocto River Watershed. This is a legacy project for the Town’s 60th anniversary and I am very proud of the outstanding work completed by our Engineering and Public Works Department.”
- Robert (Bob) Powell, Mayor of the Town of Oromocto
