News Release

Upgrades Enhance Field Conditions for Players and Spectators

June 29, 2016 – Stephenville, NL – Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency

Soccer players and fans in Stephenville are delighted with recent improvements to their soccer facilities made in part through a non-repayable contribution of $99,988 from the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program (CIP 150). Member of Parliament for Long Range Mountains Gudie Hutchings was in Stephenville yesterday and visited the pitch along with Stephenville Mayor Tom O’Brien.

Upgrades included an expansion of the existing soccer pitch and installation of new bleachers and nets. New energy efficient lighting was also installed at the arena.

CIP 150 is providing up to $300 million nationally over two years to support projects to rehabilitate, renovate and expand community and recreational infrastructure as part of the Government of Canada’s activities to honour Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation. The program is expected to boost economic activity through infrastructure investments, build community-based partnerships, while supporting the Government’s priorities to promote a clean growth economy and ensure a better future for Indigenous peoples.

Quotes

“Recreational facilities such as soccer fields and arenas are at the heart of many communities across our great country. They connect citizens and welcome visitors, bringing people together to play, compete and celebrate. The investments being made through CIP 150 are a way to give back to Canadians and to acknowledge Canada’s 150th anniversary.”

-        The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for ACOA

“Soccer remains one of the most popular sports around the world. And as children and adults in Stephenville tune in to Euro 2016 or the Rio Olympics this summer, they can emulate the moves of their favourite soccer players on a new and improved field here at home. These investments through CIP 150 help our communities remain vibrant, active and spirited, providing venues for recreational and competitive play and helping celebrate our great nation’s 150th anniversary.”

-        Gudie Hutchings, MP for Long Range Mountains
