Enhancements Announced for North Sydney Hotspot

The Honourable Mark Eyking, Member of Parliament for Sydney – Victoria, today announced a federal investment for North Sydney’s iconic Indian Beach. Between now and next Spring, Indian Beach will see enhancements made to the site entrance, roadway, parking areas, canteen, performance areas, softball field and playground area of the Indian Beach waterfront park.
The Government of Canada, through ACOA’s Innovative Communities Fund (ICF), is investing $300,000 that will be directed towards the site entrance, roadway and parking area components of the project with the overall goal of rendering the popular tourist stop more accessible to residents and visitors. The Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM) will be contributing $301,230 in funding, as well as $74,878 in-kind for work associated with the canteen, performance areas, softball field and playground area.
Indian Beach is one of only two access points to the North Sydney waterfront. Located in the community's extreme north end, adjacent to the Marine Atlantic ferry terminal and the downtown North Sydney core, Indian Beach represents one of the community's main assets. Visitors to Indian Beach can find outdoor concerts being held at the band shell almost every evening during the summer months, with the exception of Saturdays and rainy days. These concerts are very popular and often draw crowds of over 100 people. The property is also home to a sprawling beach, as the name suggests, which is a popular spot to cool off on hot summer days for local residents and for travelers waiting for a ferry.
This support builds on the federal and provincial government commitment to drive economic growth in Atlantic Canada, as announced in July 2016 as part of the Atlantic Growth Strategy.
