Government of Canada supports recreation facility in Newport

Brooklyn, N.S. – Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA)

The Honourable Scott Brison, President of the Treasury Board of Canada and Member of Parliament for Kings – Hants, today announced a $520,500 contribution to the Newport and District Rink Commission through the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program (CIP150). The Commission is completing work on the interior of the Newport District Rink, which will serve over 40,000 residents from West Hants, East Hants and the Kings County areas.

The funding announced today will enable the Newport and District Rink Commission to complete electrical, mechanical, plumbing and carpentry work on the new facility as well as interior painting and furnishings. The project also includes the installation of dasher boards, glass partitions, a scoreboard and game clock as well as a new ice plant.

In 2015, the existing community rink was demolished after the roof collapsed under heavy snow. This new facility will be open year-round, hosting 4-H Club meets and various summer sporting events, along with a large number of community skating events in the winter including youth and recreational hockey, school and public skating events, and birthday parties. Over 1,000 students from two local schools will also use the new facility as part of their physical education programing.

The project is also being supported by the Province of Nova Scotia with a contribution of $442,000, and the Municipality of West Hants with an in-kind contribution of $742,900.

The Government of Canada remains committed to working with the Province of Nova Scotia to create jobs, strengthen the middle class, and grow the Atlantic Canadian economy. Today’s announcement forms part of the Atlantic Growth Strategy’s commitment to drive economic growth in the region.
