New Ross Legion Receives a Helping Hand
News Release
Today, the Government of Canada announced an investment of $20,625 in the Royal Canadian Legion – Branch 79 in New Ross, Nova Scotia to build a safe and fully accessible entranceway to its two-story facility. This funding, which is provided through the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program, will contribute to the preservation of the Legion as a vital resource to commemorate the service of veterans for years to come.
This support will assist the Legion in the purchase and installation of an elevator lift, construction of indoor stairs and finishing the entranceway. These improvements will enable the Legion to better serve mobility-impaired veterans, members and area residents as it hosts meetings, entertainment and other community events.
This weekend, from August 5-7, the community of New Ross will also be celebrating its 200th anniversary. Activities have been taking place all year to celebrate this milestone, which are highlighted by the weekend-long celebration starting today. Events began in January 2016 with an “opening of the time capsule” left from the 150th Anniversary, and the unveiling of The History of New Ross – 200 Years, a book which captures the narrative and visual history of the community. This weekend, people can enjoy activities such as the night market, community parade, woodsmen competition, garden party and concert in the park.
As part of the recently launched Atlantic Growth Strategy, the Government of Canada is committed to supporting infrastructure projects in communities across the region. This investment builds on this commitment. Communities prosper when all people have affordable and accessible gathering spaces to find support and enrich their quality of life.

The Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program is providing up to $300 million nationally over two years to support projects to rehabilitate, renovate and expand community and recreational infrastructure as part of the Government of Canada’s activities to honour Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation. The program is expected to boost economic activity through infrastructure investments, build community-based partnerships, while supporting the Government of Canada’s priorities to promote a clean-growth economy and ensure a better future for Indigenous peoples.
