Three Community Facilities to Receive Facelift

Government of Canada Supports Community Infrastructure Upgrades in Yarmouth

August 22, 2016 – Yarmouth, N.S. - Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA)

The Government of Canada today announced an investment of $145,349 to undertake upgrades and infrastructure enhancements at three recreational and cultural facilities in the Yarmouth area. This funding, which was announced by Colin Fraser, Member of Parliament for West Nova on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for ACOA, is being provided through the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program.

An $84,506 contribution will enable the Yarmouth Arts Regional Council to improve the operational efficiency and ensure the long-term structural integrity of Th’YARC Playhouse and Arts Centre. The project includes renovating and insulating the interior and re-cladding the exterior of the foyer; replacing entrance doors and reconfiguring the threshold; expanding and repaving the parking lot; installing parking lot lights; and repairing on-site drainage. The Municipality of the District of Yarmouth is also contributing $75,000 towards this project and the Yarmouth Arts Regional Council is providing $9,507.

A $43,500 contribution will also assist the Yarmouth Golf & Country Club, who oversee the historic Yarmouth Links Golf Course, to make necessary repairs to the golf course and club house. The project includes reconstruction of the fourth hole to make it more challenging, construction of new forward tee boxes on the front nine holes for shorter hitters, repairing the clubhouse roof, and undertaking accessibility upgrades to make the facility more inclusive to all golfers. This project will better position the Yarmouth Golf & Country Club to host more high-profile tournaments, bringing additional visitors to the area. The Yarmouth Golf & Country Club is also providing $43,500 towards this initiative.

A $17,343 contribution will also help to ensure the long-term structural integrity of the Lions Club of Yarmouth Community Centre. This project will involve that replacement of 25 windows with new energy efficient windows as well as the replacement of entrance and exit doors. The Lions Club of Yarmouth is also providing a $17,343 contribution towards this project.

As part of the recently launched Atlantic Growth Strategy, the Government of Canada is committed to supporting infrastructure projects in communities across the region. These investments build on this commitment. Communities prosper when residents and visitors have affordable and accessible gathering spaces to collaborate, host events, strengthen relationships, and be physically active.

The Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program is providing up to $300 million nationally over two years to support projects to rehabilitate, renovate and expand community and recreational infrastructure as part of the Government of Canada’s activities to honour Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation.
