November 7, 2016 – Stephenville, NL – Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency
Work is underway on community infrastructure projects that will benefit residents in Stephenville, Kippens and Port au Port East. Gudie Hutchings, Member of Parliament for Long Range Mountains, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), today announced more than $79,000 in funding through the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program (CIP 150) for three projects in Western Newfoundland.
The Honourable Eddie Joyce, provincial Minister of Municipal Affairs, announced that the provincial government will contribute $30,578 towards the Stephenville Regional Aquatic Centre project.
The Government of Canada is providing $42,115 for the Town of Stephenville to upgrade the Stephenville Regional Aquatic Centre. Work will include repairing the east side and exterior walls of the building. The facility is the only aquatic centre in the region and offers lane swimming, a junior pool, a tots pool and a whirlpool to residents in Stephenville and the surrounding area.
The Town of Kippens is receiving $24,871 to extend an existing 2.8 kilometre nature trail by an additional 1.4 kilometres and to improve the park located in the central area of Kippens. The initiative will encourage more usage of the trail network and help promote the community’s outdoor assets.
In addition, the Town of Port au Port East is receiving $12,500 to improve the 50 plus club facility in the community. Upgrades to the Twilight 50+ Club will include paving the parking lot, exterior painting including wheelchair signage in designated areas, as well as purchasing new appliances for the kitchen area.
CIP 150 is providing up to $300 million nationally over two years to support projects to rehabilitate, renovate and expand community and recreational infrastructure as part of the Government of Canada’s activities to honour Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation. The program is delivered in Newfoundland and Labrador by ACOA.
