Ken McDonald, Member of Parliament for Avalon, today announced a total Government of Canada investment of $90,500 for two projects in the communities of Calvert and Tors Cove.  MP McDonald made the announcement on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA).

The Calvert Community Centre Inc. is receiving $50,250 for interior and exterior improvements to the building, including electrical upgrades, roof repairs, new doors and windows as well as interior plastering and painting.

The Tors Cove Hall Committee Inc. will use a $40,250 investment to also carry out interior and exterior renovations to the hall, including installation of siding, windows and shingles, interior painting, and upgrades to the washroom and kitchen.

Both these investments, made through the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program (CIP150) will help ensure residents of Calvert and Tors Cove, as well as those in surrounding communities, have safe, secure and comfortable venues in which to host community events and activities.

Quotes

“The Government of Canada has made a commitment to invest in improving community infrastructure as a means to strengthen communities, provide opportunities for growth, recreation and leisure for Canadian families, and to help improve our economy. Through the CIP150, we are doing exactly that while celebrating our great nation’s birthday and leaving lasting legacies to benefit Canadians for years to come.”

-        Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency

“In many rural communities across Canada, community centres like the ones we’re investing in today in Calvert and Tors Cove, are absolutely critical to a community’s health, vitality and prosperity. They are the places where all citizens – young and old – come together to socialize, to perform acts of charity and goodwill, to plan their communities’ futures and to celebrate. I am so very proud to announce these investments today, knowing they will make a real and immediate difference to the people who live here.”

-        Ken McDonald, Member of Parliament, Avalon
