Farming Operation Invests in New Technology to Improve Potato Quality
December 12, 2016 – Elmsdale, PE – Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency
A leading innovator in the potato industry, W.P. Griffin Inc. is continuously looking for ways to grow and improve. Change and innovation are embedded in this second-generation farming operation’s culture. Nearly 70 years after Wilfred P. Griffin began his farming operation, sons John and Peter now run the company, which has grown into a major agricultural employer in Prince County.
Bobby Morrissey, Member of Parliament for Egmont, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), today announced support for W.P. Griffin Inc. to purchase equipment to increase productivity. ACOA’s Business Development Program is supporting this project with a $103,612 repayable contribution.
The equipment upgrade includes new innovative ventilation technology which will allow the stored potatoes to be held for a longer period while preserving quality. This will extend the packing season for W.P. Griffin and create opportunities for more full-time, year-round employment.
