Halifax receives funds to enhance community infrastructure

News Release

March 26, 2017 – Halifax, NS – Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency

All Canadians deserve to live in inclusive and vibrant communities where they can connect with their friends and neighbours. Investing in local community infrastructure will improve existing facilities, build stronger community ties and strengthen the middle class and those seeking to join it.

Andy Fillmore, Member of Parliament for Halifax, today announced an investment of $55,038 for a project in Halifax. The work involves renovations to Pond Playhouse, home to The Theatre Arts Guild (TAG). The investment will fund the construction of two new galleries, allowing TAG to double the size of their small dressing room, replace their dilapidated bathroom, improve costume and props storage, and increase their backstage area.

Today’s announcement was made on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA).

This project is being partly funded through the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program (CIP 150). Funding in Atlantic Canada is delivered through ACOA. These investments, to honour Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation, will help create jobs, boost economic activity, strengthen communities and celebrate Canada’s rich heritage and history.

Quotes

“Cultural and recreational activities and facilities form an essential part of every community. The Government of Canada recognizes that investing in them celebrates our heritage and improves the quality of life of all Canadians. These renewed facilities not only respond to the demand for community infrastructure improvements, but also provide us an opportunity to celebrate the people of this great country.”

     - The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for ACOA

“I am so glad to announce this funding for the Theatre Arts Guild. The Pond Playhouse has been performing valiantly despite being in need of renovations for years, and finally they will be able to make substantial upgrades to their facilities. The board of directors, stage crew, actors, and volunteers at Pond Playhouse help bring inspiration, joy, and imagination center stage for the people of Halifax. Supporting their amazing work is a perfect example of what the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program is all about.”

     - Andy Fillmore, Member of Parliament for Halifax

“TAG is delighted that the Government of Canada has made it possible to move ahead with improvements which will make life better for all the volunteers who operate the theatre and, by performance or support, produce the plays enjoyed by so many of our citizens. It is an endorsement of the tremendous support given to TAG by its members over so many years."

     - Nick Jupp, Vice-President, Theatre Arts Guild (TAG)
