News Release

June 23, 2017 – Malden, NB – Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency

Supporting businesses in rural communities helps create opportunities for business growth and good paying jobs for the middle class and those looking to join it. Blue Roof Distillers, a small micro distillery built on a sixth  generation family farm, celebrated the grand opening of its facility today, thanks in part to investments from the federal and provincial governments.

The Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard and Member of Parliament for Beauséjour, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), and the Honourable Rick Doucet, Minister of Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries, made the announcement today.

The Government of Canada, through ACOA’s Business Development Program, provided the company with a repayable contribution of $113,382 to purchase new equipment enabling Blue Roof to produce premium potato vodka with potatoes that are especially selected for this purpose. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and the New Brunswick Department of Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries have also committed nearly $25,000 in funding under the five-year (2013-2018) federal-provincial Growing Forward 2 agreement to support market development, product enhancement and diversification as well as business management skills development. The Province of New Brunswick committed an additional $28,000 to the project.

This project demonstrates the Government of Canada’s new approach to economic development through innovation. Over the next five years, all six regional development agencies, including ACOA, will invest a total of $1.5 billion to strengthen innovation capacity and economic growth in each region of the country. Part of these investments will go towards supporting regional businesses like Blue Roof Distillers that are adopting new technologies to boost their innovation capacity and competitiveness.

“Atlantic Canada’s economic success depends in part on our businesses’ ability to continuously adapt so they can remain competitive here in Canada and on the world stage. I am pleased that ACOA’s support for this project will enable Blue Roof Distillers to branch out from the family farm and develop a new, value-added product. This investment is a perfect example of how together, we can move forward with fresh ideas to make innovation a national priority and put Canada on a firm path to long-term economic growth.”
