Improved Infrastructure for Communities in Southern Kings County

Six new projects supported through Government of Canada CIP 150 program

Families in the Southern Kings region will benefit from improved cultural and recreational facilities thanks in part to more than $190,000 in support from the Government of Canada. Across Atlantic Canada, improved social infrastructure is helping to build and maintain vibrant, healthy communities, and increase opportunities for all residents.
The Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, and Member of Parliament for Cardigan, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), today joined representatives from six community organizations to announce funding for the infrastructure upgrades.
The funding will support six projects, including upgrades to key recreational, cultural and social infrastructure in the region. Each project recipient will contribute upwards of fifty percent of their total project costs.
This investment is being allocated under the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program (CIP 150), a $300-million fund that was established to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday through investments in the community spaces that bring Canadians together. Of that amount, up to $33.2 million is being invested across Atlantic Canada.

“100% of the monies received were used to help fund much needed physical enhancements and repairs to the sports complex building and grounds. Without this generous support most of the needed work would have been postponed or at best scaled back because of fiscal restraints. At the end of the day the ultimate beneficiaries of the CIP150 support are the players, parents, families and all those who rely on this infrastructure.”

- $90,825 to Saint Andrew’s Lodge to improve efficiency, accessibility, and functionality of the building;
$36,101 to Eastern Eagles Soccer Association to upgrade the sports complex;
$22,380 to Northumberland Recreation Association to upgrade the ice surface cooling system;
$20,910 to Pownal Sports Centre to upgrade the refrigeration system in the arena;
$17,467 to Community of Murray River Inc. to upgrade the community centre, library and park; and,
$4,598 to Cardigan Area Heritage Association Inc. to upgrade the Heritage Centre.
