Canning Opens New Focal Point for Community Services
News Release
Village of Canning builds new facility to support community and economic development
October 7, 2017 – Canning, NS – Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency
Residents of the Village of Canning are celebrating the grand opening of a new multi-purpose facility that brings an array of community resources together under one roof. The Canning & Area Multi Complex offers the community a much desired shared resource for economic development activities, including a training room and conference space with wireless and digital projection capabilities, while also serving as an emergency comfort station. This type of modern and up-to-date community infrastructure provides access to better community services, creates economic growth and improves quality of life for residents.
The Honourable Scott Brison, President of the Treasury Board of Canada and Member of Parliament for Kings-Hants, participated in today’s grand opening celebrations, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA).
The Government of Canada supported this project with a $450,000 non-repayable investment from the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency’s (ACOA) Innovative Communities Fund, as well as a $50,000 contribution from Service Canada. The Village of Canning received additional financial support for this project from all other levels of government, including: the Government of Nova Scotia, $150,000; the Municipality of the County of Kings, $280,000; and, most remarkably, $2,000,000 from the Village of Canning and District, a significant portion of which was raised by the community through fundraising efforts.
This project is a perfect example of the type of targeted actions the Government of Canada and the four Atlantic Provinces are taking through the Atlantic Growth Strategy to stimulate Atlantic Canada's economy. Supporting key infrastructure projects such as this one supports the long-term growth of communities and positions the region to capitalize on emerging opportunities.
