New Maryland families will benefit from improved community space for a better quality of life

News Release

October 13, 2017 – New Maryland – NB – Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency

New Maryland families will benefit from an improved place to socialize and exercise and a cleaner environment as a result of a $15,050 investment from the Government of Canada.

The funding was announced today by Matt DeCourcey, Member of Parliament for Fredericton, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA).

The funding will modernize existing infrastructure by installing solar panels at the Village of New Maryland Centre, increasing the municipality’s use of clean energy.

This investment is being allocated under the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program (CIP150), a $300‑million fund that was established to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday through investments in the community spaces that bring Canadians together. Of that amount, up to $33.2 million is being invested in Atlantic Canada.

Quotes

“This investment is a community-building project to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary. And there’s no better way to mark this milestone than to celebrate the places that bring us together—the places that allow us to stay fit, unwind and connect with our friends and neighbours. That’s how we establish the bonds of common understanding and friendship in a country where people come from every corner of the world. The values of openness, diversity and inclusion that define all Canadians are forged in our community spaces.”

- The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for ACOA

‘‘The 150th anniversary of Confederation represents an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to preserving our natural environment and strengthening our environmental awareness. By modernizing the Village of New Maryland Centre with solar panels, the municipality as a whole will benefit from this green initiative. We want to encourage Canadians to build a sense of attachment to their land and connect even more with nature. ”

- Matt DeCourcey, Member of Parliament for Fredericton

“Village Council is proud to have taken this initial step in assuming a leadership role in the pursuit of climate change mitigation, greenhouse gas reduction and the utilization of renewable energy sources for its municipal facilities and operations. We are extremely grateful for the opportunity to partner with ACOA in funding such an exciting and innovative project.”
- Judy Wilson-Shee, Mayor of the Village of New Maryland
