Kings and Hants County families will benefit from improved community meeting spaces and recreational opportunities, as a result of investments totaling $282,508 from the Government of Canada.

The funding was announced today by the Honourable Scott Brison, President of the Treasury Board and Member of Parliament for Kings – Hants, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA).

The funding will support four projects including:

  • A $60,000 contribution to the Woodville Community Centre to expand the building to enlarge the fitness centre and create a meeting room. The Municipality of the County of Kings is also contributing $40,000 towards this project.
  • A $109,402 contribution to Glooscap First Nation to renovate the interior of the Glooscap First Nation Band Hall. This project will extend the life of the multi-purpose facility, which serves as a community hall, Band administration office and council chambers. Glooscap First Nation is also investing $109,402 in this project.
  • A $75,000 contribution to the Rawdon District Volunteer Fire Department to renovate its fire hall and Rawdon Community Centre. The upgrades will enhance the centre’s accessibility and functionality as a vital community service and gathering place. The Municipality of East Hants is also contributing $75,000 towards the project.
  • A $38,106 contribution to the Kingsport Community Association to upgrade waterfront facilities and enhance visitor experience. This includes replacing the existing boardwalk, upgrading parking areas, and adding interpretive signage as well as installing a new generator for the Kingsport Lloyd Memorial Comfort Centre. The Municipality of the County of Kings is providing $15,385 plus $10,000 (in-kind); while the Association is investing $2,721 in the project.

These investments are being allocated under the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program (CIP150), a $300‑million fund that was established to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday through investments in the community spaces that bring Canadians together. Of that amount, up to $33.2 million is being invested in Atlantic Canada.

Quotes

“These investments are community-building projects to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary. And there’s no better way to mark this milestone than to celebrate the places that bring us together—the places that allow us to stay fit, unwind and connect with our friends and neighbours. That’s how we establish the bonds of common understanding and friendship in a country where people come from every corner of the world. The values of openness, diversity and inclusion that define all Canadians are forged in our community spaces.”

The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for ACOA

“Our Government recognizes that local community centres are highly valued in small rural communities. These facilities are significant spaces for people to gather for cultural, recreational, and social enrichment. They not only improve the quality of life for our families, but strengthen the fabric of forward-looking, supportive communities across our region.”

The Honourable Scott Brison, President of the Treasury Board, Member of Parliament for Kings – Hants

  • Infrastructure investments are a proven, effective means of boosting economic activity and enhancing the quality of life for Canadian families.

  • Projects supported by the program are chosen based on assessment criteria including construction-readiness and public benefit, the extent to which funding is leveraged from other sources and linkages to Canada 150.
