Nova Scotia’s South Shore to gain international exposure as a sports tourism destination

International sporting and cultural events generate significant economic benefits. They also provide an opportunity to develop new relationships with world markets, promoting the province as a tourism destination and a place to do business. That is why the Government of Canada is supporting the 2019 World Junior Curling Championships in Liverpool, Nova Scotia.
Bernadette Jordan, Member of Parliament for South Shore – St. Margarets, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), today announced a $150,000 contribution to the Liverpool Championship Host Society to help the organization host the 2019 World Junior Curling Championships. The funding will go towards marketing, including the official logo for the World Championships, and will help offset costs to prepare event venues and secure accommodations for the international teams.
The funding is being made through ACOA’s Innovative Communities Fund, which helps Atlantic communities to develop competitive industry sectors and build on their strengths to create long-term employment and economic growth. The Government of Nova Scotia has provided an additional $100,000, while the Region of Queens Municipality is contributing $50,000 towards the project.
This investment builds on commitments made by the Government of Canada and the four Atlantic provinces to drive economic growth in the region through the Atlantic Growth Strategy, which involves targeted actions to stimulate Atlantic Canada's economy, including supporting long-term growth and position the region to capitalize on emerging opportunities.
