Positioning Silliker Glass for Future Growth in Borden-Carleton

News Release

Funding supports expansion of the company’s glass manufacturing line and more jobs in the region

December 18, 2017 – Borden-Carleton, PE – Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency

Atlantic Canadian businesses that put more goods and products on the market help to grow the region’s economy and create jobs for Canadians. That is why the federal and provincial governments are helping G.E. Silliker & Sons Ltd (Silliker Glass) expand and acquire the necessary technology to meet market demand, increase its sales and grow its workforce.

The Honourable Wayne Easter, Member of Parliament for Malpeque, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), and the Honourable Heath MacDonald, Minister of Economic Development and Tourism, today joined Silliker Glass and the Central Development Corporation to announce support for the company.

The manufacturer of tempered glass, insulated glass units, commercial windows, entrances and storefront systems recently purchased an industrial mall in Borden-Carleton. Half of the 50,000 square foot facility will be renovated to expand the company’s glass manufacturing line.

ACOA is providing a repayable contribution of $400,000 for the $5,500,000 project through its Business Development Program for glass manufacturing equipment. The Government of Prince Edward Island is providing a repayable contribution of $1,993,000 for the expansion, up to $250,000 in labour rebates for up to 25 new jobs, as well as a $100,000 non-repayable contribution for the fit up of the facility. Silliker Glass was also awarded $300,000 toward this project under the McCain Foods Adjustment Fund. Central Development Corporation, in addition to selling the facility to Silliker Glass, will also provide up to $100,000 for up to 20 new jobs.

This investment is one of many examples of how the Atlantic Growth Strategy is helping to drive economic growth in Atlantic Canada. The Government of Canada and the four Atlantic provinces committed to investing in strategic projects such as this one that support long-term growth and position the region to capitalize on emerging opportunities.

Quotes

Technology and market demands are at the forefront of how business is conducted today. For more than 50 years, the Sillikers have been asking – how can we make our product or service better? This company knows it takes more than a good product to keep business relevant and competitive. They continue to adapt to make that happen, and I am pleased to announce support that will help this company reach its potential and continue to serve as a great employer in rural PEI.”

  • The Honourable Wayne Easter, Member of Parliament for Malpeque

“This investment will assist Silliker Glass to meet the ever increasing demand for its products from the residential and commercial construction sectors. Prince Edward Island is leading the country in new home construction and building permits. Silliker Glass’ expansion plans will allow the company to increase production at its rural facility, and add up to 30 new jobs to help meet demand locally and develop new markets off Island.”

  • The Honourable Heath MacDonald, Minister of Economic Development and Tourism

“This expansion will help us move forward and continue to evolve and grow with the ever changing market that we service. Without the assistance of our federal, provincial and local partners this would not be possible. It is great to see their commitment to economic development in rural PEI. We are very happy to keep this growth right here in Borden-Carleton.”

  • Matthew Silliker, Owner, G.E. Silliker and Sons Ltd.

“Central Development Corporation's goal is to drive economic growth in this region by working collaboratively with all levels of government and the private sector. The employment incentives we have offered in this transaction will add good jobs in Borden-Carleton, and will better position Silliker Glass for future growth and expansion into new markets.”

  • Gordon Coffin, Chair, Central Development Corporation

Quick Facts

    • G.E. Silliker & Sons Ltd began 50 years ago as a construction company before it transformed into an advanced manufacturing facility for glass and storefront installations.

    • In 2010, the business moved to Borden-Carleton and focused solely on being a supplier to the glass industry.

    • Silliker glass is building a separate tempered, soft coat insulated glass manufacturing line that will operate separately from its hard coat line. Given the delicate nature of the soft glass inventory, a separation of the lines is important.
