Bonavista Peninsula Residents Will Benefit From New Job Opportunities and Business Growth

News Release

Governments of Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador invest more than $1.3 million to support entrepreneurs, tourism and business growth

January 24, 2018 – Port Union, NL – Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency

Supporting entrepreneurship and investing in business opportunities creates jobs for the middle class and those working hard to join it.  The governments of Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador are investing more than $1.3 million to establish an entrepreneurship support centre and to support three businesses helping to create prosperous communities on the Bonavista Peninsula.

Churence Rogers, Member of Parliament for Bonavista-Burin-Trinity, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), today announced more than $825,000 and the Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation (TCII), announced provincial funding of almost $540,000 for the four projects.

The funding will support the Bonavista-Trinity Regional Chamber of Commerce, The Seaport Inn, the Newfoundland Salt Company Ltd., and Sea of Whales Adventures Ltd.

These investments build on commitments made by the Government of Canada and the four Atlantic provinces to drive economic growth in the region through the Atlantic Growth Strategy, which supports strategic investments in initiatives that build on the region’s competitive advantages.

Quotes

“The Government of Canada believes that public investment is the best way to spur economic growth, job creation and broad-based prosperity.  We are making strategic investments that build on competitive regional advantages and support diversification of our communities. We will continue to help businesses grow, innovate and export so that they can create good quality jobs and generate wealth for Canadians.”

  • The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for ACOA

“Canada’s economic success comes from its strong communities, and the exceptional people who live, work and serve in them every day.  Establishing an Entrepreneurship Support Centre for this region and supporting the expansion and growth of existing companies, in Trinity, Port Union and the Town of Bonavista creates new jobs, helps grow the economy and benefits everyone on the Bonavista Peninsula.”

  • Churence Rogers, Member of Parliament for Bonavista-Burin-Trinity

“Guided by actions in The Way Forward, government is working hard to develop a strong, diversified economy with a high standard of living. Today’s announcement highlights the key role our Business Innovation Agenda plays in this, by helping to foster an entrepreneurial climate and strengthen a culture of innovation. This investment also spotlights our Provincial Tourism Product Development Plan, and government’s commitment to working with the tourism industry to increase tourism experiences, so that by 2020, annual tourism spending by residents and non-residents in Newfoundland and Labrador will double 2009 levels.”

  • The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation

“The unique history and entrepreneurial spirit of communities throughout the Bonavista Peninsula make it an amazing place to visit, and the ideal location to live and start a family. This region of the province has experienced steady growth in its population in recent years, and in the past two years 60 new businesses have opened, bringing energy and new life in the area. The funding announced today will support existing and future entrepreneurs who will all contribute to the area’s continued growth and prosperity in the coming years.”
