Saint John families and community groups will benefit from an improved place to gather, socialize and exercise as a result of $37,962 from the Government of Canada.

The funding was announced yesterday by Wayne Long, Member of Parliament for Saint John-Rothesay, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA).

The funding will support renovations to the Thistle – St. Andrews Curling Club’s facility which will increase accessibility to persons with disabilities and improve the building’s energy efficiency. The club is home to several youth and senior curling leagues and is also used by numerous community groups throughout the year for various events.

This investment is being allocated under the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program (CIP150), a $300‑million fund that was established to celebrate Canada’s 150^th birthday through investments in the community spaces that bring Canadians together. Of that amount, up to $33.2 million is being invested in Atlantic Canada.

In addition to today’s announcement, Saint John has received a total of $889,089 for ten projects under the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program.
CIP 150 is designed to leave a lasting legacy by supporting the rehabilitation or improvement of existing community infrastructure assets and facilities across the country that promote community and cultural benefits for the public.
Infrastructure investments are a proven, effective means of boosting economic activity and enhancing the quality of life for Canadian families.
Projects supported by the program are chosen based on assessment criteria including construction-readiness and public benefit, the extent to which funding is leveraged from other sources and linkages to Canada 150.
