Discovery Centre Opens Ocean Gallery

News release

New exhibits will help develop and promote Nova Scotia’s thriving ocean technology sector

June 8, 2018 – Halifax, NS – Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency

Curiosity, creativity and collaborative spirit lead to innovations and technologies that improve our lives and drive our economy forward. This is why the Government of Canada has contributed $1,322,500 toward the creation of new experiential learning space at the Discovery Centre in Halifax. The Ocean Gallery provides hands-on learning opportunities that stimulate interest in ocean science and respect for the marine environment.

Andy Fillmore, Member of Parliament for Halifax, announced the funding today on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) at a grand opening event celebrating  World Oceans Day. The non-repayable contribution, through ACOA’s Innovative Communities Fund, highlights Atlantic Canada’s growing ocean research community in a fun interactive space that excites the minds of young innovators.

The new Ocean Gallery and its companion Innovation Lab introduce visitors to virtually all aspects of ocean science and technology development. Interactive exhibits and experiential learning programs inspire respect for the ocean environment and serve as a catalyst for innovation, critical thinking, and lifelong learning in a sector of growing significance to the Atlantic economy.

This investment builds on commitments made by the Government of Canada and the four Atlantic Provinces to drive economic growth in the region through the Atlantic Growth Strategy, which supports strategic investments in initiatives that build on the region’s competitive advantages such as its growing tourism industry and internationally recognized ocean economy.
