Tourism Season Extended at Memory Lane

News release

Memory Lane Heritage Village to be first museum in Nova Scotia with universal and Tesla electric vehicle charging stations

June 28, 2018 – Lake Charlotte, NS – Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency

In 2017, Canadians welcomed a record 20.8 million international visitors to our shores. The tourism industry is vibrant from coast to coast to coast, as one in 10 jobs in Canada is associated with the visitor economy. Investing in tourism, in both big cities and small towns throughout Atlantic Canada, is essential to growing this important economic sector for Canadians. By investing in our tourism sector, we attract new visitors, grow businesses and create new ones, generating economic growth.

That is why the Government of Canada is investing $48,350 in the Lake Charlotte Area Heritage Society to broaden the tourism season at Memory Lane Heritage Village.

Sean Fraser, Member of Parliament for Central Nova, is making the announcement today on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA). The non-repayable contribution is being allocated through ACOA’s Innovative Communities Fund. The Halifax Regional Municipality is also contributing $8,000 to the project.

In response to increased visitor volume and demand, the Lake Charlotte Area Heritage Society will undertake upgrades to extend the operational season at Memory Lane Heritage Village. A modernized kitchen and accessible and gender-neutral washrooms are integral to providing an inclusive destination for all visitors. Additional renovations will be made to the Clam Factory, garage and church.

Universal and Tesla brand charging connections, the first dual installation at a museum in Nova Scotia, will be unveiled at a special event taking place 12:00 p.m. this Sunday, July 1, 2018 at Memory Lane.

This investment builds on commitments made by the Government of Canada and the four Atlantic Provinces to drive economic growth through the Atlantic Growth Strategy by helping the tourism industry attract more visitors and create new jobs across the region. This bold new approach is in line with Canada’s Tourism Vision, which seeks to make Canada a top-ten global tourism destination by 2025.

“As attendance at Memory Lane has grown, we have become more and more important to the local tourism industry and for the last few years we have been asked by many operators if we could open earlier in the year and close later.
