Atlantic Canadian Multi-Sectoral Trade and Investment Mission to China

Backgrounder

Context

Federal ministers and Atlantic premiers announced they will lead a multi-sectoral trade and investment mission to China in mid-November 2018.

The mission will support Atlantic Canadian businesses and organizations in targeted sectors that are looking to create new partnerships and build business-to-business relationships in China, Canada’s second largest trading partner after the United States.

This mission supports the trade and investment pillar of the Atlantic Growth Strategy which is designed to expand Atlantic Canada’s international markets, and promote and position the region to attract new investments and tourism.

Participants

As of July 2018, participating ministers and premiers include:

  • The Honourable Nadveep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency
  • The Honourable Scott Brison, President of the Treasury Board
  • The Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard
  • The Honourable Lawrence McAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food
  • The Honourable Ginette Petitpas Taylor, Minister of Health
  • The Honourable Seamus O’Regan, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence
  • The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador
  • The Honourable Wade MacLauchlan, Premier of Prince Edward Island
  • The Honourable Stephen McNeil, Premier of Nova Scotia.

Mission Objectives

  • Facilitate market access for Atlantic Canadian small- and medium-sized enterprises that are export-ready and have an ability to do business in the China market.
  • Create trade and investment opportunities for Atlantic Canadian businesses.
  • Promote Canada as a prime tourism destination by leveraging the Canada-China Year of Tourism.
  • Strengthen cultural and economic relationships between Canada and China.

Sectors targeted for recruitment

  • Food and beverage producers including seafood
  • Clean growth
  • Education sector
  • Tourism (Atlantic Canada as a destination)

Companies will be recruited to participate based on the objectives of the mission, their alignment with the target sectors and their level of export readiness.

Program and itinerary

The mission will visit the following cities: Qingdao, Shanghai and Beijing.

The program includes:

  • Trade shows;
  • Business-to-business meetings tailored to participants’ needs and opportunities in the China market; and
  • Networking events.

Recruitment

The Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) is working closely with trade officials from other federal organizations and the Atlantic provincial governments to identify companies and organizations that could benefit from this trade and investment mission.
