News release

August 14, 2018 – Shediac, NB – Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency

Investing in tourism infrastructure projects in communities throughout Atlantic Canada is essential to growing this important economic sector for Canadians. By investing in our tourism sector, we attract new visitors, grow businesses and create new ones, generating economic growth for the middle class. Today, the governments of Canada and New Brunswick announced more than $3.6 million to the Pointe-du-Chêne Harbour Authority for infrastructure repairs to the popular wharf.

The Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Intergovernmental and Northern Affairs and Internal Trade and Member of Parliament for Beauséjour, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), along with Victor Boudreau, MLA for Shediac-Beaubassin-Cap-Pele, on behalf of the Honourable Bill Fraser, New Brunswick Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure and Minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation, joined Pointe-du-Chêne Harbour Authority officials to make the announcement.

The project includes an environmental assessment, repairs to the existing front concrete wall, reconstruction of the existing boat slipways, the inner harbour and south walls, as well as the restoration of the south shoreline behind the wharf’s bait sheds.

The Government of Canada is contributing $1,844,775 to this initiative through ACOA’s Innovative Communities Fund, and the Province of New Brunswick is providing matching funding of $1,844,775 through the Regional Development Corporation. The Pointe-du-Chêne Harbour Authority is investing $409,950.

These investments build on commitments made by the Government of Canada and the four Atlantic Provinces to drive economic growth in the region through the Atlantic Growth Strategy by helping the region’s tourism industry attract more visitors and create new jobs across the region. This bold new approach is in line with Canada’s Tourism Vision, which seeks to make Canada a top-ten global tourism destination by 2025.
