News release

The Vince Ryan Memorial Hockey Tournament is a winter economic staple

March 14, 2019 – Membertou, NS – Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency

From picturesque landscapes and cascading clifftops to world-renowned seafood and one-of-a-kind experiences, tourism plays a vital role in Cape Breton’s economy. Annual winter events that attract visitors from away provide an economic boost and long-term benefits for the economy. That is why the Government of Canada supports community projects and events that drive growth in Atlantic Canada’s tourism sector.

For the last 30 years, the Vince Ryan Memorial Scholarship Hockey Tournament Society has been a fixture of the winter Cape Breton tourism season, filling hotels and restaurants with visitors. Through the efforts of more than 200 dedicated volunteers, the tournament has grown to become a significant part of Cape Breton’s winter tourism offerings, having built an international reputation with teams participating from across Canada, the United States and Europe. The tournament also plays a key role in creating opportunities for young people as proceeds go toward scholarships for local high school students.

Rodger Cuzner, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour and Member of Parliament for Cape Breton – Canso, behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), announced support for the Vince Ryan Memorial Scholarship Hockey Tournament Society today.

This investment builds on commitments made by the Government of Canada and the four Atlantic Provinces to drive economic growth in the region through the Atlantic Growth Strategy, which supports strategic investments in line with Canada’s Tourism Vision to make Canada a top-ten global tourism destination by 2025.
