Ocean Choice Introduces Innovative Onboard Production Technology

News release

Government of Canada supports clean technology processing equipment for new vessel

July 4, 2019 – Bay Bulls (NL) – Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency

Innovation in resource-based industries helps fuel a strong and sustainable economy in Atlantic Canada. To that end, Ocean Choice International (Ocean Choice) will install and integrate an innovative production line for groundfish onboard its new Arctic class vessel, which is currently under construction. The new vessel will enable approximately 70 new full-time jobs to be created at sea, mainly for employees in rural areas.

Bay Bulls-based C & W Industrial Fabrication and Marine Limited has been sub-contracted to build and install the world-class production line for the vessel. The equipment will enable Ocean Choice to process its key groundfish stocks at sea using innovative and clean technology to maximize yield and quality, and deliver market-ready products. The energy efficiency components and technology being incorporated into the design and build of the production line and vessel are expected to lead to a clean class designation, or Green Ship, which will be a first for a Canadian groundfish vessel.

The Government of Canada is providing a repayable contribution of $3.5 million for this project and Ocean Choice is investing $3.5 million.

The Honourable Seamus O’Regan, Minister of Indigenous Services and Member of Parliament for St. John’s South-Mount Pearl, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), made the announcement today.

The Government of Canada is making smart investments that will create good, middle-class jobs in our country. It is helping businesses to start-up, expand or modernize. Support for this project is one way the Government of Canada is working to achieve its Atlantic Growth Strategy outcome of long-term economic prosperity in the region.
