Backgrounder: Five Local Companies Benefit from Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency’s Support for Steel and Aluminum Sector

The Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) is investing more than one million dollars in five local companies through the Regional Economic Growth through Innovation (REGI) Steel and Aluminum Initiative.
Details of the projects are as follows:
D.F. Barnes Fabrication Limited
Funding amount: $250,000
D.F. Barnes operates a large industrial fabrication facility focused on marine, energy and industrial construction. Through this project, the company will acquire automated and robotic fabrication equipment to improve its quality, capability and efficiency. This project will be instrumental in increasing the company’s competitiveness in domestic and international markets.
Pennecon Fabrication Limited
Funding amount: $250,000
Pennecon Fabrication Limited, a subsidiary of Pennecon Limited, manufactures equipment for heavy industry and the offshore oil and gas industry. Through this project, the company will upgrade its steel rolling capability and material processing. It will acquire a heavy gauge plate roller to capitalize on fabrication opportunities in the offshore oil and gas sector and major projects in the construction industry. This new equipment will enable the company to offer fabrication capabilities not currently available in the province.
Browning Harvey Limited
Funding amount: $250,000
Browning Harvey Limited is an independent beverage manufacturer and distributor. Through this project, the company will adopt new technology to improve productivity and competitiveness. This includes purchasing new equipment to replace outdated canning line components, which will increase efficiency and provide more options in the size of cans the company can produce. The new equipment will also enable the company to scale-up and grow its business, as well as reduce energy consumption.
Cahill Fabrication Structural Limited
Funding amount: $150,000
Cahill Fabrication Structural Limited, a division of The Cahill Group, specializes in piping, structural steel, HVAC systems and assembly services. Through this project, the company will acquire and upgrade specialized equipment to improve its business and access export opportunities. New advanced steel fabrication equipment will include a wheelabrator for preparing raw materials. Upgrading equipment will enable the company to enhance the quality of finished products, reduce costs and material waste and improve overall operational efficiencies.
C & W Offshore Limited
Funding amount: $150,000
C & W Offshore is a multi-discipline fabrication company that provides services primarily to Newfoundland and Labrador’s offshore oil and gas industry. Through this project, the company will acquire additional specialized equipment to automate its production processes and support continued lean manufacturing initiatives. This will enable the company to operate more efficiently and remain competitive in the offshore oil and gas industry.
