Man tosses gun out of vehicle during an eventful March for the CBSA in Saskatchewan
News Release
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is pleased to share a sample of March highlights from its border crossings in Saskatchewan:
On March 23, Neal Ainsworth Jr was fined $10,000 after pleading guilty to CBSA Criminal Investigations charges stemming from an incident at the North Portal border crossing. On March 21, 2016, Ainsworth was referred for a secondary examination after declaring no firearms. As he was driving to the examination area, he tossed a loaded .45-calibre handgun onto the pavement. Officers also located a prohibited switchblade knife in the vehicle console. In Carlyle Provincial Court, Ainsworth pleaded guilty to making false statements under the Customs Act and unauthorized possession of a handgun in a motor vehicle under the Criminal Code.
The largest enforcement action of the month also took place at North Portal on March 24, when officers offloaded a commercial trailer and found 1,612 switchblade knives. Penalties are pending, and the knives were seized with no terms of release as they are prohibited in Canada.
Officers at North Portal made two suspected child pornography seizures – the first on March 8 and the second on March 26. In the first instance, officers detained a United States (U.S.) man bound for Alaska after finding a suspected prohibited image on his cellphone. After consulting with law enforcement partners, they seized the device for further examination and allowed the subject to continue into Canada. In the second case, officers arrested a U.S. commercial driver after finding images of suspected child pornography on his laptops. The man and his devices were turned over to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
On March 7 at Estevan Highway, officers refused entry to a U.S. man with a conviction for possession of cocaine with the intent to distribute. At West Poplar River on March 13, CBSA officers refused entry to a U.S. woman who had charges and convictions for embezzlement, battery, and false personation. At Oungre on March 21, officers turned away a U.S. man with a conviction for aggravated assault. On March 22, officers at North Portal refused entry to a U.S. commercial driver convicted of multiple charges including sexual misconduct with a minor. On March 11, also at North Portal, officers refused entry to and issued a deportation order against a foreign national who was seeking permanent resident status, as he had previously been convicted of fraud over $5,000 in Canada.
