Guns, arrests at the Saskatchewan border in November

News Release

December 15, 2016                  Regina, Saskatchewan              Canada Border Services Agency

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is pleased to share a sample of November highlights from its border crossings in Saskatchewan.

On November 13, officers at the North Portal border crossing seized a restricted .45-calibre pistol, the ninth undeclared handgun of the year, while searching a commercial vehicle. CBSA charges are pending against a 44-year-old Alabama man, who is scheduled to appear in Estevan Provincial Court on January 9.

Also at North Portal, on November 4, officers searched a commercial vehicle and found a prohibited butterfly knife inside a pair of pants in the sleeper area. The male driver, from Manitoba, was detained for smuggling and paid a $500 penalty for failing to declare following his release. On November 25, officers uncovered a pair of brass knuckles and a switchblade in the cab of a commercial truck. Both prohibited items were seized, and the male driver, of Kentucky, returned to the United States (U.S.)

On November 30 at the Regway crossing, officers searched the vehicle of a returning Alberta man and found a prohibited knife and stun gun, in addition to undeclared tobacco products and a pipe with suspected methamphetamine residue. The traveller continued into Canada without these items, and paid a $500 penalty for failing to declare.

Front-line CBSA officers are responsible for enforcing outstanding warrants at the border, and intercepted individuals wanted in Canada:

  • At Saskatoon International Airport on November 8, officers arrested a Saskatchewan man wanted on a warrant for assault. He was transferred to police custody.
  • At the Regway border crossing on November 15, officers arrested a Saskatchewan man wanted for impaired driving and failure to appear. He was turned over to Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
  • At the Carievale border crossing on November 20, officers arrested a Saskatchewan woman facing a harassment charge and wanted for breach of recognizance. She was turned over to the RCMP.

On November 17 at North Portal, officers examined a trailer bound for Alaska and uncovered a variety of live animals that had not been declared. In total, there were 40 cats, three birds, and one goat. Many of the animals lacked proper import permits or vaccination certificates, and the owner, a female U.S. resident, returned with them to the U.S.

Officers at North Portal, the largest land border crossing, welcomed more than 19,000 travellers to Canada, and refused entry to 39 foreign nationals for various reasons, including criminality:

  • On November 5, a U.S. resident bound for Alaska was refused entry for multiple convictions, including vehicular manslaughter and grand theft. He attempted to enter Canada at the Torquay border crossing later that same day, and was again turned back south.
  • On November 10, officers refused entry to a Tennessee man convicted of using a government computer to view child pornography.
  • On November 16, officers turned back a U.S. commercial driver convicted of multiple offences, including battery, arson, and impaired driving.

The CBSA reminds Canadians picking up parcels in the U.S. this holiday season to know the contents and the value of their parcels before re-entering Canada. If returning with gifts, please ensure that the gifts are unwrapped when crossing the border, as a CBSA officer may need to open the package to verify your declaration.

Quick Facts

  • CBSA officers in Saskatchewan process an average of 64,271 travellers in 15,789 cars, 12,424 commercial trucks, and 263 flights every month (based on 2015 statistics).
