CBSA officially opens modern POE facility at Lansdowne

News release

Today, on behalf of the Honourable Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, Mark Holland, Member of Parliament and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, officially opened the newly constructed Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) facility at the Lansdowne port of entry (POE).

Ensuring an efficient and secure border is important to Canadians and the economy. Almost $2.5 billion dollars’ worth of two-way trade passes between Canada and the United States every day, in addition to more than 400,000 travellers.

The Government of Canada invested $60 million into this larger facility. The Federal Bridge Corporation Limited, a Canadian Crown corporation, as the developer and new owner, on behalf of the Government, was tasked with the project’s oversight and completion. Construction began in the spring of 2015 and finished in December 2017. The project follows through on commitments made in the Beyond the Border Action Plan announced in December 2011.

The new facility replaces the former commercial facility built in 1960 and the traveller facility constructed in 1972. The new 76,000 square foot building is approximately three times the size of the old facility. The infrastructure improvements involved the complete renovation and expansion of the entire Canadian plaza, including an expansion of the CBSA travellers’ facility, the secondary examination facilities, and better roadways.

The remodelled POE meets the needs of the travelling public, commercial services, immigration services, the wellbeing and safety of CBSA staff and clients, and is positioned to meet projected increases in traffic for many years to come.

The CBSA inspection facilities at Lansdowne are owned and operated by the Federal Bridge Corporation Limited.

Quotes

“The Lansdowne port of entry is a key crossing between Canada and the United States. This new CBSA facility reflects our commitment to ensuring the secure and efficient movement of travellers and goods across the border. Those flows are vital to our economic prosperity and quality of life. The remodelled port is designed to serve travellers and businesses now and in the future.”

Mark Holland, Member of Parliament and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness

“Our biggest challenge was to transform the existing port of entry, located on an island, and to work around the previously existing 60 year-old buildings and related infrastructure to construct a modern 21st century port of entry. We are particularly proud of the new facilities and having succeeded in delivering this project with minimal disruption to the traveling public and CBSA operations”

Micheline Dubé, President and Chief Executive Officer, Federal Bridge Corporation Limited

“The Government of Canada is committed to supporting projects that improve the flow of traffic, including people and goods. The quality of Canada’s transportation infrastructure and the efficiency of our trade corridors are key to the success of Canadian firms in the global marketplace.”

The Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport

“I am very proud of the work our staff here at Lansdowne undertake every day to facilitate the free flow of persons and goods while also protecting the security of Canada and Canadians.  This new facility is evidence of the CBSA working in close partnership with stakeholders to renew our infrastructure to meet the border management needs of today as well as into the future.”

John Ossowski, President, Canada Border Services Agency
