Avoid the wrong kind of surprise this Mother’s Day

News Release

Competition Bureau urges consumers to take extra precautions when ordering flowers online

May 10, 2017 – OTTAWA, ON – Competition Bureau

Offering colourful, fragrant flowers to show our love and appreciation is a great Mother’s Day tradition. Combining it with online shopping seems like a quick and easy option.

But, not so fast. A little bit of research before placing an order can avoid the heartache of a late delivery of wilted flowers or arrangements that look nothing like the photos on the vendor’s website. Following up on a purchase that went wrong, with an unresponsive company, can also be a thorn in your side.

To pick a trustworthy service amid many online choices, follow these tips:

  • Shop around various sites – Even when ordering a delivery to a far location, consider searching for locally based companies, in addition to more visible online purchasing portals. If there is a shop in the area of the delivery, it will help reduce transit time and keep the products fresh.
  • Do your homework – Take the time to read details on websites and research delivery services and prices from multiple suppliers. Make sure you understand the store's guarantee and their substitution policies. Try to get feedback from people you know and trust, in addition to using online customer reviews that could be overly positive.
  • Ask the supplier questions – Contact customer service to enquire about any details on the website that are not clear. Confirm service delivery timelines and the total cost. Find out how customer complaints are handled and what recourse you will have if you are not satisfied with the service.
  • Protect yourself – Always be mindful of the legitimacy of the websites you access. If you purchase through a credit card, it will be easier to dispute the charges in the event of issues with the suppliers. Keep a record of your dealings with the company. If you believe to have been misled, report the deceptive marketing practices by filing a complaint with the Competition Bureau.
