KUGLUKTUK, NUNAVUT (July 9, 2019) – The Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations, the Honourable Carolyn Bennett, issued the following statement today on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Nunavut Day:

"Today we celebrate Nunavut Day alongside the people of Nunavut. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the creation of Nunavut, the newest territory in Canada.

Following the passing of the Nunavut Act and the Nunavut Agreement in 1993, Nunavut became its own distinct territory when it officially split from the Northwest Territories in 1999. The creation of this territory was a historic moment which forever changed this nation, but more importantly a moment that showed the strength and determination of Inuit to shape their own destiny.

No one knows the North Arctic, its land and animals and the abundance of its waters and ice better than the Northerners who live there. The knowledge held by Inuit of Nunavut brings unique perspectives and valuable knowledge to Canada as a whole. Stunningly beautiful and rich in culture and knowledge, Nunavut and its people play a vital role in the development of Canada- the true north, strong and free.

The Government of Canada remains committed to working in partnership with Nunavummiut and Northerners to promote sustained prosperity for the North.

Today, let us celebrate together by acknowledging the significant cultural, social and economic contributions of Nunavummiut to our country. Moving forward, we are guided by this important relationship and shared history in our collective goal of building a bright and prosperous future for Nunavut and Canada.

I wish everyone a safe and enjoyable day of celebration.

Happy Nunavut Day! Nunavut ullunganit nalliunirsiutsiarit!"
